THIS ONE'S FOR THE MUSIC!

By: Arista C. Alcantara
Himig, a socio-civic music inspired organization in Adamson University, held a conjoined event which featured; a battle of the bands, titled “Acousticlaban” and a concert, highlighting the essence of music, titled “United in Musique” at the SV HALL last October 6, 2012.
The event started off with a performance given by Babad, an experimental hardcore band, who sang hits from Philippine national all-stars Valley of Chrome.  Following them was Sintas, an alumni metal band who performed songs from Bullet for my Valentine, they are now currently performing around Manila and are trying to develop the progressive music scene.  Both bands feature a unique quality in their vocal strength which depict a new era for rock music itself. They defy the norms of the average listener and welcome them to a new range of heavy yet substantial and critical music.

As for the Acousticlaban, it was composed of six bands which had all undertaken a screening test before the actual competition. The judging criteria composed of Planning/Preparedness (20%), Originality (30%), Interface with audience (10%), Quality of performance (20%), and Presentation (20%). The Judges namely: Engr. May Anne M. Bunquin, ECE (Adviser), Jake Henry Gayo (Former President 08-09), Sabrina Medina – Gayo (Founder of Himig), Matthew John Bacani and Romnel Razo, had to determine each of the contestants performances based to every detail of their expertise. There was also an incident that two of the bands had to perform once again due to a tie. In the end the 2rd runner up, was Everyday Lourdsday trailed by  the 1st runner up,Dukit and the champion, Pintakasii. All of them received cash prizes, an award plaque.

United in musique was a free concert celebrating the exposure of different genres of music. Julius Ray N. Gumba, current president of Himig, quotes that Our members must open their minds and explore the world of music, this inspires them and lets them share their skills he has sought out bands like Kafkaesk, a melodic alternative band and Blangko Berso, a sampaguita influenced rock band with an enigmatic female front, as they develop a distinctive yet recognizable sound. The concert was commemorated for honouring music at new heights. Magnifying the truth of what music really is: Evolution.
Mutually both events give us a glimpse of what music is and can be. In retrospective, music changes, grows and progresses. Talent and skill may always be there but it is the flow of harmonious tunes that we find our salvation and passion. Through music we express and empower others and by holding these kinds of events we realize the effects and importance music has in our lives.
